ABOUT ABOUT

Sunday, January 19, 2 PM – Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances at the New World Symphony

Step back into Hollywood’s Golden Age with a powerful, cinematic afternoon of music. Experience lush film scores from musical exiles Erich Korngold and Franz Waxman, whose evocative compositions transport you to a world of wartime stories, hope, and resilience. Conductor Anja Bihlmaier, known for her imaginative interpretations that "lift music off the page" (BBC), leads this moving concert.

The performance highlights Rachmaninoff’s expansive Symphonic Dances, composed shortly after his escape from a war-torn Europe. His final work, this sweeping piece is a bold declaration of his creative spirit, featuring a nostalgic saxophone solo and a waltz that gradually builds into an ominous finale.

Additionally, Cuban composer Julián Orbón infuses his homeland’s folk music into his compositions, while Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw solemnly memorializes the harrowing experiences of those affected by WWII, calling us to remember the unthinkable loss.

This concert is part of Resonance of Remembrance, a season-long series at the New World Symphony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust. The series honors the millions of lives lost and serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency to reflect on history and envision a peaceful future.

Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of music that speaks to the soul, honors the past, and inspires hope for the future.
